Microsoft Access
Regarded by many so-called professional database developers as something of a basic database system,
Microsoft Access is much maligned within the programming world. Because it's reasonably easy to use, weak or inexperienced developers can create poorly designed,
fundamentally flawed applications much more quickly and easily than with other databases and programming languages.
Don't be put off by that - in the right hands, with a database developed correctly by professional consultants, Access is often the perfect choice for use within a small
business. Why? Read on...
Reasons to choose Microsoft Access
- Cost: Access is significantly cheaper to develop, support and maintain than virtually any other database system. Also with the availability of runtime Access for free
it's very easy and cost-free to deploy to users within your company.
- Ease of development: robust applications can be built more quickly in Access than most other database systems.
- Scalability: An application developed initially in Access can be easily ported over SQL Server with a .Net front end if your business "outgrows" it.
Bear in mind though that Access tables can stored up to two million records per table. The issue with Access databases isn't usually the amount of data that can be stored, assuming the database was
developed correctly in the first instance - the issue is that of "concurrency", i.e. the number of users using the database at any one time. If your database is likely to be used by
any more than 15-20 concurrent users, we strongly recommend SQL Server as the database of choice.
- Integration: Assuming you are running Microsoft Office, it's relatively easy to integrate Access with your existing Word or Excel documents.
